    REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTY

What is Breast Reduction Surgery & What Does It Accomplish?

Also known as a reduction mammoplasty, our breast reduction surgery helps women with large, pendulous breasts either achieve a smaller, more proportionate breast size or ease discomfort in the back, neck, and shoulders. For some women, getting breast reduction surgery will create a more aesthetically pleasing look and help lift functional limitations. The surgery will remove excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breasts to make them smaller and firmer to the touch.

What is Breast Reduction Surgery & What Does It Accomplish?

How is a Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Our breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours. It involves making 3 incisions, one around your areola, one down from the areola to the breast crease, and a final one across the natural breast fold (or bra crease).

For women who are worried about scarring, a “lollipop incision” can be made which makes 1 incision around your areola and 1 vertical incision under the areola down to your natural fold.

Once the incisions are made, the excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed from above the nipple. The nipple and areola are shifted up to sit higher on the breast and any remaining skin above the nipple is pulled down to form smaller, firmer breasts.

    Prepping for Breast Reduction Surgery

    Prepping for Breast Reduction Surgery

When you come in for a consultation, we will talk about your ideal look and size. We will go over your medical history, overall health, examine your breasts, take photographs, and provide a detailed description of the risks and benefits.

    9-18 MONTHS

What to Expect After Breast Reduction Surgery?

Immediately after surgery, we will cover your breasts with gauze dressings and cover them with either a surgical bra or elastic bandage to keep them in place.

If deemed necessary, we may place a drainage tube under each arm to remove excess fluid or blood. Pain medication and antibiotics may be required to reduce the possibility of infection. Your breasts will be extremely sensitive to touch, may be swollen, and you may experience bruising.

    What About Physical Activity?

    What About Physical Activity?

Physical activity must be limited for 2-4 weeks while your breasts heal and avoiding underwire bras is recommended. Stitches will be removed after 1-2 weeks and you will be given a support bra to wear for the duration of your recovery.

Gentle exercise can be resumed after 2-3 weeks. After 4-6 weeks, you will be able to resume heavy physical activity like lifting weights, with your doctor’s permission. Follow up appointments will be scheduled at 8 weeks and at 6 months.

It is important to note that you may experience numbness or other sensations in your nipple and areola area for up to 12-months after surgery. This is completely normal and will dissipate once all swelling has subsided.

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Right For Me?

Is Breast Reduction Surgery Right For Me?

If you experience any of the following issues, then breast reduction surgery is right for you.
Restricted physical activity. Chronic pain in the neck, shoulder, and back.

Low self-esteem related to breast aesthetics. Chronic irritation or rashes in the breast fold. Difficulty with clothing due to the large size.

Breast reduction surgery is not recommended for women who smoke, want to breastfeed children, or who have plans to lose a lot of weight.

    Is Breast Reduction Surgery Permanent?

If you take care of your breasts after surgery, you can maintain the results. Unfortunately, if you gain a lot of weight or choose to become pregnant, this can alter your small size.

Weight gain and childbirth can cause your breasts to swell, increasing their overall size. If you take natural or synthetic hormones, this can also cause your breast tissue to swell.
